The Home School Support Network Online Academy is your source for Home School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Our current class offerings focus on computer science, technology, and cybersecurity for teens. Our goal is to honor God with our service to you. We are a Christian home school support service.     This class is intended for middle and high school students interested in developing knowledge, skills, and abilities in Information Technology or Cyber Security. All students can benefit from this course regardless of their future education or career plans. Students interested in programming and coding can benefit from this class by learning how the computer systems work and how to manage those systems that their code runs on. Students interested in other career fields outside the information technology field can benefit form learning how the technology around them enhances their work and this course can enhance their ability to communicate their technology needs to the technology geeks that support them. 

    This course teaches students how computer systems work. They will learn how to troubleshoot computer systems using system administration skills on Microsoft, Apple, and Linux operating systems. The class will be delivered via instructional videos with additional assignments and quizzes. Students and parents will have access to grades using the Home School Support Network (HSSN) Online Academy Learning Management Software (LMS).

    Bonus: Class participants residing in the Lowcountry of SC may be eligible for a HSSN Cyber Competition Team based on factors such as participation in coaching sessions (outside of class), class engagement, and availability for competition and practice dates. (An additional Cyber Team registration fee applies.)

    • Introduction to computers-terms, hardware, software, networks, & Internet

    • Introduction to routers, switches, firewalls, etc - troubleshooting problems and connectivity 

    • Installing and updating software

    • Introduction to vulnerability assessment and patching

    • Identifying, adding, deleting, and modifying users

    • Threat assessment (understanding hacking techniques)

    • How to identify malicious content

    • How to protect personal data  

    • Problem solving operating systems including Windows, Mac, & Linux

    • Computer ethics

    • Introduction to programing languages

    • Introduction to how computer systems work in a business environment

It will be used for live interaction with me during Q&A sessions using Adobe Connect collaboration software. I will offer this Q&A sessions periodically for active students.

    Description

    This class is a follow-on to our Introduction to Computers and Security class. Your child will access this class using a computer from the comfort of your home. The class delivery format is "On Demand". The On Demand format allows you and your child to determine when they access the material and how often. The classes are delivered in a pre-recorded video with interactive assignments. A grade book is available that can be accessed using your child's HSSN login.

    Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers and Security

    This course is dedicated to Home School Support Network (HSSN) team members. This course will provide an environment to share links and resources intended to enhance our cyber team's knowledge,skills, and abilities. Students in the local area of Charleston, SC get access to this course by invitation only.  

    Do you have a middle or high school child who has an interest in computer management and protection? Is your child interested in an Information Technology or Cyber Security career? Give your child a valuable skill set for their future!

    Or perhaps you as the parent would like to learn more through distance learning from the comfort of your own home? Does your family have a home business, blog, or ministry website of which you maintain the integrity and availability?

    This is a live, interactive class viewed online. Your child will access this class using a computer from the comfort of your home.
